Simon's Lunch Box Diet gets 5 Stars in Elle Magazine

"According to Personal Trainer and Lifestyle Coach Simon Lovell, losing weight isn't about focusing on what you eat for breakfast and dinner, it's what you have in between that counts. With this in mind, Simon's downloadble, online diet advises me to graze from a specifically designed lunchbox every hour throughout the day in order to maintain balanced sugar levels prevent hunger and fit into my party dress.
My prescribed lunchbox is 60 per cent organic vegetables, 30 percent protein and 10 per cent dressings - the more exercise I do, the carbs I can have, but as a certified gymphobe, I don't intend to do any, so carbs are off limits altogether. There are no specific rules when it comes to breakfast and dinner - just that I should try and eat healthily as possible - and the big bonus is that I don't have to give up alcohol.
On day one, I reluctantly put an avocado, two carrots, half a pack of mangetout, three beetroots and a chicken breast in my lunchbox. I'm used to eating until whatever has been put in front of me has gone, so it takes all my willpower to resist scoffing down the whole lot before 11am. Still, eating little and often throughout the day means that I don't experience my usual mid-afternoon sump and stops me feeling ravenous when I get home from work - I’d normally tuck into a mountain of pasta, but tonight, soup fills me up.
Week two and apart from one weak moment involving a jacket potato, I settle into the routine of the diet. I don't miss my old lunchtime favourite (a tomato and mozzarella baguette) one bit. I'm continuing to cut down on the amount of food I eat for breakfast and dinner, as I just don't feel hungry, and I feel energised, despite the lack of carbs. The only downside is that good organic fruit and vegetables don't come cheap - £1.70 fir an avocado! Also, the cold veggie emphasis makes this better for summer than winter.
At the end of the four weeks, the diet has become a way of life and I've lost 12lb. It's a realistic plan that doesn't involve being a food saint. I'm a convert to the little-and-often school of weight loss."

Simon Launches Exeter Food Boot Camp

Following the success of the Lunch Box Diet, Exeter personal fitness trainer Simon Lovell 'Aka The Heat Personal Training' has launched his own nutrition boot camp that provides a number one service for those looking to improve their awareness of a healthier lifestyle through eating well.
Simon is offering two sessions around the Exeter area, one home visit where clients are taught about good and bad food choices along with techniques on adjusting their food eating patterns to tie in with their lifestyles. While many people find keeping their weight down a constant battle, part-time male model Andrew Elston had the opposite problem.
At 6ft 7ins tall, he has always been skinnier than he would like, but the crunch came when he was told he needed to fill out to get more modelling work.
In less than five months, Andrew has transformed his physique and has gone from 84.1kg (13st 2lb) to 102.6kg (16st) with the help of personal trainer Simon Lovell, who drew up a high-intensity weight- training programme and correct nutrition advice.
"I had the chance to do an assignment for a sportswear company," explained Andrew, a self-employed telecommunications consultant from Honiton.
"I was told my physique was good, but not good enough. They said I was on the light side and I had to put some weight on.
"Ever since I can remember, I've always found it difficult to put weight on, whatever I ate. I wanted to put on bulk, but the right type -to tone my muscles and shape them, and make them big without the fat."
Andrew, who is married with two children, decided that he would need a personal trainer to make sure he was eating and training correctly. He has been training with Simon at Fitness First in Exeter since the beginning of January.
Simon explained: "A lot of the time, people who want to put on weight go to the gym, but they aren't properly informed and end up leaving lighter because they are not training correctly. You need to know what you are doing - you have to eat properly to gain weight and complement it with exercise. Andrew has been training four times a week for an hour. He spends one session interval training and three sessions muscle building."
Andrew has also been following Simon's lunch box diet, a healthy-eating plan that is also used by people who want to lose weight. The diet involves packing a lunch box with different combinations of food and grazing on it throughout the day, plus eating a normal breakfast and evening meal.
"Andrew has had to eat more than normal to get the calories in, but the principle is exactly the same," said Simon. "He gets all the nutrients which play a massive part in how his body synthesises things like protein and is able to generate muscle."
Andrew said: "I'm on a huge diet now - I eat five or six times a day. I estimate I'm eating about 4,500 calories a day. The lunch box diet has been really important. I've been eating lots of coloured fruits and vegetables, meat and a lot of nut-based products.
"Eating six times a day includes pasta or rice at least twice a day, a lot of meat and a lot of eggs. Every other day I have three eggs for breakfast and two bowls of cereal. I probably get through seven or eight bananas a day and I have five pieces of fruit last thing at night as well - every day I have three grapefruits and at least two oranges. On top of that, there's whey protein, which I take twice a day, and carbohydrate multi-dextrin-based drinks, which I make with whole milk and chocolate to give myself energy before training. Weight training can really take it out of you."
Andrew has put on nearly three stones and is very pleased with his progress.
"When I first started, I didn't think I was going to cope with the weights Simon was talking about. When I came in, I couldn't lift 3kg dumbbells above my head. Now I'm doing about 30kg," he said.
"I've seen a huge difference in my physique. I take photos of myself once a month - front, side and back views - to track my progress. Looking back at the ones I took in January, it's just amazing. The muscle structure is far more defined.
"Where I was skinny there is bulk. I used to be able to put my hands around my bicep - I can't do that any more. Before, I modelled suits because of my height, but there's no doubt that with the bulk I've got now, I can really make the suit hang well on me - it looks really good.
"The other place I've noticed it is on sheer power and strength. I can do things now that I wasn't able to do when I started training."
And Andrew is keen to point out that the fast results he has achieved have been through hard work alone. "A lot of people don't want to wait for results and they take steroids, which is really harmful," he said.
"This is based on two things only: one is the lunch box diet and the mix of fruit, vegetables, nuts and meat, and a balanced diet. The other is the high intensity weight training.
"The diet has to be a lifestyle thing - you can't just do it for a few months. You have got to carry on doing it, just like someone who puts weight on easily. I've got to do the same thing but in the other direction.
"It has been a lot of hard work, but we've got there."

Smoke Free from July 1st!

A smoky atmosphere is the single biggest reason for avoiding a pub or bar, according to a survey published by the Department of Health today, which also showed a high level of support for smokefree legislation.
And with only 50 days to go until smokefree England becomes a reality, the Government is launching a national advertising campaign to remind the public what the legislation will mean when it comes in to force on Sunday 1 July.
The survey of 1700 adults shows that 36 per cent of people cite a smoke-filled atmosphere as the main turn-off for going to a bar or pub, with the type of people who frequent the venue coming in second at 20 per cent. Over two thirds (67 per cent) of people would rather spend the evening in a smokefree venue, than one where smoking is allowed, and 91 per cent (including 83 per cent of smokers) now consider lighting-up in a non-smoking place unacceptable.
Public Health Minister, Caroline Flint, said:
"With only 50 days to go until England goes smokefree our aim is to ensure that everyone is aware of the new law, how it will affect them and what they need to do to prepare. Our snapshot survey shows that the majority of people know that smokefree legislation is coming, but almost half the population are not aware it comes into effect on 1 July.
"The campaign is a reminder to people of the date and gives examples of the range of locations which will be smokefree. It forms part of a comprehensive communications campaign to make sure that businesses and individuals understand what action they need to take.
"We are confident that with the support being provided by the Department of Health and by local councils, everyone should be ready in time."
The survey also reveals widespread support for the legislation. Findings include:
93 per cent of the overall population are aware that smokefree legislation is coming, however 45 per cent don't know that it comes into force on 1 July 2007 71 per cent of regular pub-goers support the legislation, as well as 76 per cent of the overall population 68 per cent of the population say that the legislation will not effect how often they go to the pub, 15 per cent say they will go more often and only 7 per cent will go less often (10 per cent were not pub-goers) 76 per cent of the population believe that going smokefree will have a positive effect on health
The TV ad, which runs on national TV for the first time on the evening of 14 May, shows an 'everyday' man walking through a variety of locations, including a cafe, pub, garage and office, which will all be required to be smokefree. He explains that from 1 July smoking will no longer be allowed in enclosed and substantially enclosed public places and workplaces. The ad finishes outdoors, in a pub garden.
Recent research carried out amongst businesses, showed that 41 per cent of businesses in England do not realise that smoking rooms will need to be closed and more than half (53 per cent) are unaware that work vehicles will also be covered by the legislation. The advertising forms part of a major campaign to prepare businesses and the public for 1 July, including a dedicated website and a mail-out of guidance to 1.7m businesses in England.
